University and College Union (UCU) strike to defend pension scheme
During the past weeks, members of the University and College Union (UCU), the trade union for higher education workers in the UK, have been organising strike actions over impending changes to their pension scheme. Employers’ current proposal to end the guaranteed USS pension would mean a loss of around £10,000 a year in retirement. UCU has called for industrial action because of the employers’ failure to reach an agreement with them to protect pensions, believing that sustained, disruptive action will bring the employers back to the negotiating table.
