From 20-21 September 2021, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona will be hosting the virtual conference ‘Visual Motifs and the Public Sphere’. As part of a larger research project on the production and circulation of images of power in Spain, the conference brings together empirical research and theoretical approaches from cinema and film studies, visual arts as well as social and political communication. Abstracts (200-300 words in Spanish, Catalan or English) exploring the systems of self-production of power and the public sphere can be submitted online until 10 August 2021 via the conference website. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, discussions of images of power in fictional media, explorations of GIFs, memes and mashups in political processes, as well as theoretical studies on the continuity and transformations of political iconography.
