NECSUS: Call for Book Reviewers – August 2024
The purpose of the book review section is to inform NECSUS readers about new scholarship in media studies and to support critical engagement with published work. Please consult the Review Guidelines for further guidance. In the upcoming issues of NECSUS, we are particularly interested in featuring reviews of the following books:
- The Ethnographic Optic: Jean Rouch, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, and the Turn Inward in 1960s French Cinema by Laure Astourian
- Music Films Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music by Neil Fox
- AI in the Movies by Paula Murphy
- LGBTQ Film Festivals Curating Queerness by Antoine Damiens
- Tacit Cinematic Knowledge: Approaches and Practices by Rebecca Boguska, Rebecca Puchta, and Marin Reljic
- Beyond Realism: Naturalist Film in Theory and Practice by Robert Singer
- Theatricality and the Arts: Film, Theatre, Art edited by Andrew Quick and Richard Rushton
- Performative representation of Working-Class Laborers by Jennifer Vanderpool and Colin Gardner
- Constant Disconnection: The Weight of Everyday Digital Life by Kenzie Burchell
- The Richard Dyer Reader by Glyn Davis and Jaap Kooijman
Reviewers are invited to write essays of 1,500-2,000 words that focus on one of these publications.
For all reviews, is important that authors take a critical stance on their chosen titles, providing a thoughtful account of the texts and their position alongside other media studies scholarship rather than a general summary. Authors should not be connected to the writers of the books they are reviewing in either personal or professional terms. Reviews may be motivated by current trends in film and media studies but can also tackle issues that remain overlooked within the disciplines.
If you are interested in reviewing one of these titles – or a different book – please reach out to the to the section editors Patrícia Nogueira and Victoria Pastor-González using our contact form.
