Call for Applications: Banting postdoctoral fellowship in Cinema and Media Studies (CMS)
The Department of Cinema and Media Arts at York University invites applications for a Banting postdoctoral fellowship in Cinema and Media Studies (CMS). In an effort to positively transform CMS by creating greater visibility and substantial equity for scholars of color, and address the long history of Black underrepresentation in our discipline, this opportunity is open only to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black people of African Descent (including Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, North America and Latin America).
Housed in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, the Department of Cinema and Media Arts is the most comprehensive university-based film program in Canada, with a curriculum rooted in the interrelationship of theory and practice. To learn more about our faculty please visit our website: https://cma.ampd.yorku.ca/
Interested applicants should contact their potential supervisor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts before July 15.
Because of the highly competitive nature of this opportunity, an internal selection process is in place, whereby supervisors/candidates must submit a truncated, preliminary version of the application as an LOI (Letter of Intent) on an internal deadline in advance of the agency deadline. All LOI submissions will be reviewed by the York Banting Selection Committee. Successful candidates will then be invited to go forward to the full application stage and submission to the agency. The internal deadline is July 29.
The purpose of the Banting program is to attract top-tier postdoctoral applicants—who are recent PhDs from other national and international institutions—as postdoctoral researchers. The Banting program is unique in its emphasis on the “synergy” between the applicant and the host institution—that is, the close and unique alignment of the supervisor’s research, the applicant’s research, and the institution’s strategic priorities. This “synergy” should therefore guide both the prospective supervisor’s choice of candidate and the nomination package’s points of emphasis.
